ABOUT

The Project

An Important Memory for Humanity is Refik Anadol’s groundbreaking limited-edition NFT collection that utilizes data from the world’s first all-civilian space flight. The collection presents a series of unique and poetic data sculptures and paintings of the Inspiration4 mission.

For this collection, Anadol and his team interpreted the entire data archive from the NASA-funded
research institute TRISH (Translational Research Institute for Space Health) on the effects of space travel on the human body. TRISH conducts cutting-edge research into the impact that the conditions in space have on the astronauts, with an attempt to reduce the health risks of venturing deeper into the
universe.

Anadol’s one-of-a-kind NFT collection not only reveals an insight into the challenges of space travel, but also contributes to a meaningful and purposeful cause to help solve critical health issues on Earth. 30% of all NFT sales will be donated to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Drop Dates

The drop will begin on April 7th, 2022 and conclude on April 10th, 2022.

Platform

The drop will take place on a website developed in collaboration with Manifold. The NFTs will be minted on the Ethereum blockchain with a custom smart contract specifically developed for the project.

This eponymous piece of the collection is a poetic visualization of the audio and visual memories and
health data collected from the Inspiration4 mission. As its title suggests, this seminal data sculpture
solidifies a memorable moment in the history of space exploration in the blockchain space. The work
processes the photographic and audio memories of the mission, such as vehicle data and audio/visual
recordings from the flight. To create this milestone moment in 21st century art, Anadol pushes
machine-learning research into new territories where scientific innovation meets artistic expression.

ULTRASOUND DATA SCULPTURES

DESCRIPTION:
Ultrasound Data Sculptures are the ultimate expressions of how machines become collaborators of the
human body and consciousness both during the space mission and the creation of this NFT collection. As Anadol processes carotid vascular, ophthalmic, and bladder ultrasounds of the astronauts that were
collected during the mission, he aims to bring attention to the importance of interpreting these datasets for the future success of similar missions.

T+/- Data Sculpture Series emerges from the intertwining of collective memories from humanity and
machines, offering multi-channel interpretations of the video recordings of the three key moments of the mission: Lift Off, Entry Burn and Splashdown. The collection suggests that in Anadol’s artistic vision, the relationship between dreams and imagination can take their most creative and innovative forms by focusing on the feelings and situations associated with traveling to unknown territories.

DESCRIPTION:
This collection of data paintings is born from a narrative of data that travels from the spacecraft to
Earth, including latitude, longitude, altitude, temperature, relative humidity, cabin pressure, partial
pressure CO2, partial pressure O2, partial pressure N2. Telemetry Data Paintings are tokens of the
“machine memories” of the mission and the digital souvenirs that the intrinsic properties of the vehicle
brought to us from space.

INSPIRATION4 – DATA UNIVERSE

DESCRIPTION:
The 21st century is the first golden age of space exploration and of artificial intelligence. In addition to
viewing space exploration archives through the lens of artificial intelligence, one of the goals of this
series is to address the idea of looking at humanity “from outer space.” UMAP Sculptures are AI data
paintings that simulate a latent walk in a data universe of all the images and spoken words from the
mission, as the space travelers were looking at the world from outer space. They combine Anadol’s vision of handling data within its own universe with his approach to data visualization’s latent space as a locus for self-generating expansion, like that of the universe.

HEARTBEAT DATA PAINTING

DESCRIPTION:
What would you see and feel if you could look at someone’s heartbeat recorded in space? TRISH’s
partnership with the recent Inspiration4 flight, the world’s first all-civilian mission into orbit, collected raw data from a series of experiments to discover what effects space had on the human body. This data
sculpture uses the heartbeat information collected from the astronauts during the mission by TRISH,
hoping to bring more awareness to various health issues humans encounter both on Earth and in space.
